“Over My Dead Body” By ArrowGriffin

Noelle Brody sketch by Luis Laczky.

We don’t get a lot of Fan-Art here at the DuneWorld but today we’ve thought to show off two of the pieces we have received for OMDB.

They’re fantastic and we hope to see more of them in the future so we can do this again.

Greetings from the DuneWorld. You may have noticed that we’ve been rather silent on our blog as well as Twitter for the last few months. We know what you’re thinking but the DuneWorld is alive and well.

We’ve been working hard on multiple titles and personal projects but largely our efforts have been on successors to: “Zono Blast” and “Over My Dead Body.” So you have those to look forward to in the future.

We’re going to be updating the blog on a more frequent basis with work in progress shots, design work, etc. We hope you’ll like what you see and like what we have in store for you.

Sincerely, DuneWorld Games.

Like many Twenty-Something year old Canadians I have spent an unhealthy amount of time watching “Dragonball Z” and it’s original series “Dragonball.” They were action packed, addictive, and full of humour. Or at least that’s how I felt about Akira Toriyama’s series when I was in Elementary school.

Having gone back into the series’ both as a teenager and a young adult I can say with a lot of certainty that neither holds up as well as I had hoped. They’re not bad but the shine they had as a child was certainly not as there. The action was crippled by the well known decompression, the humour felt flat more often than not and the character dynamics that served as the series’ heart gradually fell apart to become the Goku/Vegeta show. But I’m not here to critique Dragonball. In fact I still have a lot of love for the series, it’s just become more and more of a guilty pleasure over time.

image

Any-who, I was made aware of a new manga series by Akira Toriyama by the name of “Jaco The Galactic Patrolman” a few months ago. People seemed to speak very highly of it and the snippets of art I viewed were incredible (Very clear and expressive characters on great backgrounds). So when I noticed it was on Comixology I had to give it a try.

I was very happy that I did. Jaco was a very enjoyable and contained series, never getting too big for it’s allotted length. Though somewhat juvenile ( no where to the extent of early Dragonball however) the jokes hit every single time thanks to the art and dialogue working together so well. The action was diverse, very clear, and most importantly it never felt unnecessary or dragged out. And the small, contained cast allowed the Three main characters to all have memorable moments and an interesting dynamic.

image

Spoiler alert, this one volume series turns out to be a prequel to Dragonball. Now I’m not going to say that this affiliation hurts the series but I’ll admit, I could have done without the connection. Thankfully I loved this series so much that Jaco has retroactively become my favourite Dragonball character! Heck, it was probably done to be used as a selling point and if it gets you reading this? All the better.

If you have about Seven dollars to spend you could do a lot worse than to drop by Comixology and trying:

In case you’re only now following us or missed our many announcements and live tweets of the event, four of us (Plus Zane Fernandes, pictured below) manned the DuneWorld’s very first table at a genre event. The Dartmouth Comic Arts Festival last Sunday.

There we had a demo of the newest iteration of “Over My Dead Body” as well as a set up for our latest 48 hour game project “Zono Blast.” And we are proud to say that both of them were very much a hit. We received some really great feedback and we’ll be sure to apply it before we release “Over My Dead Body (For You)” for sale.

There was plenty of fun to be had whether they were testing out the new gameplay advances of OMDB or trying to break the Festival high score on Zono. And boy was that High score a challenge for most. Those who beat it were given a free poster of their choice.

image

And of course we have many posters left for future shows! Heck, if you’re interested in purchasing one of our 8.5x11 prints just shoot us a message! Supplies are limited.

Of course we weren’t the only catches at DCAF this year, there were dozens of fantastic artists of all levels of renown and they all helped to make it a special day for all visitors. A huge shout out to folks like: Matt Cummings, Kate Leth, Nick Bradshaw, Troy Little, Shannon Long, Geoff Isherwood, dozens more and last but not least, Jeph Jacques for the incredibly awkward photo taken by Dave!

So that’s the long and short of our fantastic voyage to the Dartmouth Comic Arts Festival last Sunday and we hope to be there and ready to go next year. And we hope to see you there as well!

DCAF 2015 Was a Blast.

Zono Blast and the Over My Dead Body Demo was a hit and we met a lot of cool exhibitors and gamers.

Still plenty of prints left for those interested, just drop us a message and we’ll see what we can do with our limited supply!

We’ll have a more in depth analysis of the show in the next few days complete with pictures. Just wanted to let you all know that we had a jolly time!

The Dartmouth Comic Arts Festival is almost upon as, and as you may be aware The DuneWorld is going to be out there in full force. There’s going to be a lot of exciting guest at Alderney landing on 16th of August (11AM-5PM). So stop by our tables to try some demos after you’ve met Jeph Jacques, Matt Cummings, Troy Little and More!

As you can see above we’re going to have these “Over My Dead Body” pamphlets to hand out and three different prints based off of OMBD and Siesta-Rena.

And the best part is that admission is 100% free. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and we hope to see some of you there.

Michael recommends “An Honest Liar”:

It can be hard at times to find a gem while scrolling through Canadian Netflix. A recent addition, “An Honest Liar” (Directed by Justin Weinstein and Tyler Measom) , turned out to be an extremely interesting and thought provoking biographical documentary. James “The Amazing” Randi is a former magician, escape artist and now scientific skeptic who uses his magical powers for good: debunking ‘psychics’, ‘mind readers’, and ‘faith healers’.

As the film begins we learn a bit of background into his early years, recreating the stunts of Harry Houdini, before moving on to his time as a professional skeptic. This is the portion of the documentary I found to be most rewarding, as Randi is a true champion of rational thought. Watching him expose the frauds of swindlers like Peter Popoff (a well-known American televangelist, self-proclaimed prophet and faith healer) is satisfying yet disturbing, as you see many people willing to deny the truth even when solid proof is presented to them on live television! It is also intriguing to see Randi’s successful deceptions of the scientific community, as even those we trust with being objective are accepting lies and theatre at face value.

The plot thickens near the end of the film: A twist as we join Randi in a detailed look at his personal life and relationships, discovering more secrets as they unfold. No spoilers; I highly recommend this film to anyone willing to open their mind to the interesting and magical history of “An Honest Liar”. You can find An Honest Liar on Netflix as of July 2015.
